Explanation

To remember the actions of Sergeant William Jasper. At the Battle of Sullivan's Island, June 28, 1776, the flag pole holding the American Patriots' flag was shot down. Sergeant Jasper risked his life, by climbing over the wall of the fort, to retrieve the flag. Once back inside, he stood on the battlement, with the flag tied to a cannon sponge, and rallied the troops repelling the British fleet. The British withdrew, not to return until 1780.
